Think your marriage is safe just because you’ve been together forever? Think again.
An Italian couple married for 77 years recently filed for divorce because of an affair that has been over for 60 years.
A few days before Christmas, the 99-year-old Antonio C. found old letters that his wife wrote to a former lover in the 1940s. His wife, the 96-year-old Rosa C., admitted to the affair, and thought she might be able to convince him to let bygones be bygones, and stick with the marriage. She was wrong. He filed for divorce shortly thereafter citing spousal infidelity.
During their 77 years together, Rosa and Antonio had five kids, 12 grandkids, and one great-grandchild. Sometimes not even a lifetime of history together is enough to overlook what is so devastatingly painful: the act of cheating.
When the divorce is finalized, they will become the oldest divorcees on record, surpassing a British couple, Bertie and Jessie Wood, who divorced after a 36-year marriage at 98 years of age.
